Welcome To Miss Chestnut Goes to Denver Fundraising Campaign
All About Me
My name is LaKeisha M. Chestnut. I am the author of "Keeping It Real with LaKeisha" and I am an elected delegate for Congressional District 7 in the State of Alabama. I am honored to be apart of the most important election in my lifetime. I am one of the only two Young Democrats in the State of Alabama that was elected as a delegate.
I have been involved in politics since I was 22. In 1998, I was a volunteer on Don Siegleman’s campaign. Then in 2000, I was part of Al Gore’s campaign in New Hampshire. I had the honor of meeting him and Tipper after a debate at Dartmouth College. I was a volunteer on Jeanne Shaheen’s gubernatorial campaign, and as well as John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004. I was happy to be involved, but my shining moment didn’t come until 2005.
In February of 2005, I was living in Orlando, Florida, and I attended my first Orange County Young Democrats meeting. I met a few people who thought I would be a valuable asset to the organization and asked if I would run for a position on the executive board. At first, I thought that I shouldn’t run because I didn’t know anything about Florida politics, and how would people take me, an outsider, as a member of the executive board. Then I realized that I have a voice, and I wanted to represent those who didn’t. I decided to run as Community Affairs Vice president. I won overwhelmingly. My job was to put a face to our organization in the community, and I did just that. I organized a voter registration/petition drive at the Juneteenth Celebration. When there was no one to attend events that supported democratic interests in Orlando, I was there. I was a asked to be a volunteer and a delegate for Sen. Rod Smith at the Florida Democratic Party State Convention. I even helped a fellow young democrat with his campaign when he ran and won a seat on House of Representatives. My voice was invaluable. I was happy being apart of an organization that was on the brink of extinction. The 2005-2006 Orange County YD Executive board made the organization a force to reckon with. In fact, we were going to work with the Tampa Bay YDs and the Daytona Beach YDs to have an I-4 corridor gubernatorial forum featuring the candidates for Governor. I was proud of our accomplishments and still am to this day.
